Welcome to QBOA
The Queensland Boulder Opal Association Inc. (QBOA) is an industry body that represents Opal Miners and QBOA’s members.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to Covid19 restrictions, the annual BOULDER OPAL FESTIVAL and associated QUEEN OF GEMS International Jewellery Design Awards will NOT be held this July 2020. To protect the local community, Winton Shire Council has wisely closed the town to outside visitors & tourists, cancelling all events, festivals and large gatherings for the next few months. For more, see Queen of Gems information.
Opal is Australia’s National Gemstone
The QBOA’s function is to ensure that Legislative and Regulatory bodies controlling the industry have appropriate policies that are suitable to the needs of the Industry, and the promotion of this rare, unique product, Queensland’s Boulder Opal.
Vince Evert and a committee of local miners founded the Queensland Boulder Opal Association in Winton in 1992. Vince was born in Winton in 1932 and had long realised the potential of this beautiful gemstone. Vince was elected President of the committee, which organised the first Boulder Opal Auction held in Winton on the 29th May 1993, which was indeed successful.
Vince had a long affiliation with Boulder Opal and the QBOA until his death in 1998, and is remembered fondly as a modern day pioneer and for his commitment to the opal industry. Today, the QBOA is recognised as the peak representative group by Industry and Government bodies for the Queensland Opal Industry.
