QUEEN OF GEMS OPAL JEWELLERY DESIGN COMPETITION FOR 2008

Held at the  WINTON OPAL FESTIVAL  Friday 4th & Saturday 5th July 2008

AIM: The QBOA offers a forum for talented jewellery designers and makers with a view to stimulating the creativity of the contemporary Queensland Boulder Opal jewel. The competition aims at showcasing the modern opal jewel through the limitless creative energies of our designers/jewellers; avant-garde ideas and exclusive designs are a must. The artist is given free rein. It promotes boulder opals in general and the QBOA as a “centre of excellence” in particular.

PARTICIPANTS: The competition is open to professional and non-professional designers, students, graduates, teachers, jewellers, goldsmiths, etc.

CATEGORIES:

CATEGORY 1:- Student/Novice - Any piece of jewellery with a retail value up to $2,500.

ENTRY FEE $ 50-00

CATEGORY 2:- Professional - Any piece of jewellery with an unlimited retail value.

ENTRY FEE $100-00

CRITERIA FOR BOULDER OPAL JEWELLERY PIECES:

Submitted entries must be original designs. They must not have been put on display or commercialised before.

There is no limit to the number of jewellery pieces entered, but each entry is subject to an entry fee.

Boulder Opal must be the focal point of the piece. Other gemstones (synthetic gemstones, cultured pearls, Australian timber and shell etc.) may be used to enhance the design, but must not detract from the main criteria of the award.

All work should be handmade, with the use of necessary and appropriate tools. All materials used in the creation of the piece should as far as possible be Australian precious metals, however this does not exclude the use of new and innovative materials.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

All entries must be insured during transportation to and from Winton. Such insurance is the responsibility of the entrant. Your failure to secure insurance in no way shifts responsibility to QBOA.

While the QBOA will take every precaution to ensure the security of the exhibits, including insurance against theft, loss or damage, QBOA will accept NO liability nor give any specific guarantee against theft, loss or damage of the exhibits.

The QBOA accepts all entries in good faith, on the basis that they are original works, which comply with the conditions of entry. The QBOA accepts no responsibility for any piece that is subsequently found not to be original. The QBOA also reserves the right to remove any entry from competition without explanation, and/or rescind any award

.Entrants must allow their pieces to be modelled at the Gala Dinner Dance when the winner will be announced.

The QBOA reserves the right to photograph the entries for use in all QBOA marketing and publicity activities.

Entries must be delivered to QBOA free of all freight or other charges no later than Friday 22/6/07.

Nomination and payment of entries close Friday 8/6/07.

Return of jewellery by registered post must be paid for by the entrant.

CANCELLATIONS will not be entitled to a refund.

QBOA reserves the right to refuse any entry that is late or does not conform to the specific Rules and Conditions of entry.

JUDGING:

Entries will be judged by alphanumeric identification only. Participants are to remove from boxes or jewellery containers any identifying marks, company/trading names, as well as any reference to the designer/manufacturer of the entry. The use of trademarks or manufacturers stamps is not permitted.

A short technical description of the piece and the source of inspiration is to accompany each piece.

The judges decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

At the discretion of the judging panel additional prizes such as High Commendation, Commendation or Certificate of Merit may be awarded.
