8th National Opal Symposium
Winton hosted the 8th National Opal Symposium from 5 July to 7th July 2016.
All were welcomed to Winton with the evening meet and greet, a chance to get to know one anther in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Official business started on Day 2, where the Symposium was opened by Winton Shire Mayor Butch Lenton, and Mount Isa MP Robbie Katter. It was a full day of Opal field reports from Winton, Coober Pedy, and Lightning Ridge, mining strategies, government mines department speakers, after which attendees climbed on board the ‘monster’ buses and were driven to the ‘Age of Dinosaur’ museum for a quick tour, and drinks and dinner with the most magical, vision splendid sunset on earth.
Day 3 was all about the science…did you now Opals were Martians? An intense, informative time with our many dedicated, passionate Gemologists and Geologists. To end, a family of Opal miners shared their stories of enduring generations – what better note to bow out on.
